One of the things that we have noticed since we started to support our clients through their registrations with Ofsted and setting up of their homes is how difficult it is to get good staff. If we are being honest, this isn’t a new thing and everyone is fishing for staff in a very small pond.
There are lots of recruitment agencies and consultants out there who are trying to connect applicants with vacancies. Some are very good at it. Some less so.
Contrary to what some agencies seem to believe, not just anyone can work in a children’s home. It takes a certain kind of person with a unique skill set beyond paper qualifications. They need to meet regulatory requirements and be able to satisfy all required checks under Schedule 2. We have been supporting a client recently who had engaged with a recruitment consultant who seemingly referred anyone who had worked with children in any capacity for the vacancies, some of whom were wholly unsuitable to work in a regulated children’s home in any capacity. This scattergun approach is not only unhelpful and resource sapping, it is bordering on dangerous.
That’s why we have decided to get our collective heads together at Oxonia and are going to throw our hat into the ring when it comes to recruitment. We have all been where you are, either looking for a new role or trying to fill vacancies. We have decades of practical hands on experience in the management of children’s homes and in recruitment within social care and we are going to put that knowledge and skills to good use!
We will be going out to source and engage with top quality candidates and then connect them with those looking for the best staff. Not only that, we will even ensure that anything needed for safer recruitment checks will already be in place even before they come for an interview.
We will make sure that any referrals we make will have:
A full and verifiable employment history
Have appropriate identification
Right to work in the UK
Requisite knowledge, experience and qualifications for the role
Be on the DBS update service
Be able to provide Certificates of Good Conduct if appropriate
Be able to provide suitable references in line with regulatory requirements
For any applicants, we will support you through every step of the process, make sure that your application is tip top ands support you to prepare for the interview.
So, if you are looking for staff to come and work in your children’s home or if you are looking for a new challenge in another home or looking for an opportunity to develop your career, please get in touch with us for a chat.

We are also able to support with safer recruitment including shortlisting, interviews and interview questions, Warner interviews and Schedule 2 checks.
We think that the right people should be working with vulnerable children. Let us help make that a reality.
